So, you’re going to visit a murder mystery party? There are things which you should take care about. I’ve created a bullet list for you so that you don’t have to read long paragraphs!

Avoid revealing your character and goals given to you in your invitation to anyone. If you family members are attending the party too, don’t reveal anything to them too! The real fun in mystery parties is the mystery itself, don’t spoil it!

You’ll probably get your invitations with instructions about your character before 4-5 weeks of the party. Go through it, and keep all of them in your mind.

Don’t arrive late in the party, so that you don’t miss out anything.

Most of the parties would be quite dynamic, i.e. people can achieve their given goal in a way they choose. Thus, interact with others, strike a conversation with them. Remember, they may also be working against you. Read my “Be The Sherlock Holmes Of A Murder Mystery Party” to tap into your detective mind!

If you’re the criminal, try to be calm. Other sleuths may be suspicious about you at some stage, but do your best to avoid their detection! If you don’t emphasize something, only good keen eyes will be able to see you as a suspect.

Don’t use real props like knives etc. This is just a game.

Some people might act rude, some might not even talk. This might be due to their own attitude, or they have been instructed to do so. Its just a game, remember!

Though quite unlikely, if you are unable to attend the party, inform the host as soon as possible. It allows him more time to make changes to the plot and characters if necessary.

This one is the most important, ENJOY!

In many interactive murder mystery parties, the guests interact with each other and try to unmask the criminal. See the Interactive Murder Mysteries part for more information.

In such cases, each participant needs to have a keen eye for each others’ action. He/She needs to understand the clues uncovered and how it can relate to the suspect. This is the advantage of Interactive Murder Mysteries. Every guest can try to find out what had really happened and uncover the villian!

If you browse through the Murder Mystery Ideas (For Kids Here, and For Adults Here) page, you can find some great scripts to match your taste. These are professionally crafted scripts.

There is just one thing I want you to remember, “Don’t Try To See What You Understand, But, Understand What You See.” Now, I know that anyone would like to be the Sherlock Holmes of the party, except when you’re the murderer/criminal.

You can visit sites like Braingle and browse through its mystery section. Its a puzzle site, wherein you can find a lot of mystery puzzles too. This will enhance your critical reading and understanding, so that you can see things from a different angle.

The first few puzzles might be tough, but then, you’ll know which part you need to concentrate.

In an interactive murder mystery party, try to find anything out of the ordinary. Now, you’re not a professional detective, but you don’t need to be either. Interact with other guests. As a rule, each guest has to achieve a target, and he is free to do it in any ways. Thus, if you’re keen on uncovering the secret, you will find a lot of dynamic stuffs happening around you, which is great.

Keep a piece of paper with you so that you can jot things down. Write down clues and stuffs you find important. This will help you solve the puzzle.

Remember, if two things look similar, they need not be the same! Thus, you need to join all pieces of the puzzle, only at some time to find that some parts don’t fit very well. These are mostly the villian’s various statements, which are subtly incorrect, and the major clues towards finding him.

So good luck, master sleuth!

You may have hosted or participated in many murder mystery parties, or maybe not. Most of the time, like in dinner murder mystery parties, it is played on a table. This is great, and people do have a lot of fun. But there are ways to bring the “real thing” to the show.

Interactive Murder Mysteries are what they are. They allow everyone to be dynamic. You are not bound to a specific “script”. You can have your own attitude. Though there are preset goals one needs to accomplish, it is entirely upto him on how he should do that!

People can talk and chit-chat with each other. If you’re one participating, it is upto you to decide whom to believe and whom to not. Doesn’t it sound like the real world?

Each person is given a preset of goals. The murderer knows that he is indeed the murderer, and how he committed it. He must do his own best to avoid being suspected. Also, the players are not confined to a round table too!

There are many such murder mysteries published, and I’ve list many of them below. You may find a right fit for you!

Murder mysteries are really fun. So, you’ve at last decided upon hosting one!

Now, lets get going. Before you do start, these prerequisites can prove very useful.

Visit a mystery party hosted by someone else, before hosting one yourself. You can gain some knowledge and experience, as well as incorporate improvements which you see in your own murder mystery party.

Have a good script ready. There are many of them available for you to download in an instant. You can check out the Murder Mysteries Ideas (For Kids Here, and For Adults Here) page to find them. A good script can make all the difference in a murder mystery party.

Now, towards the main part.

Many of the murder mystery kits or scripts I’ve mentioned in the Murder Mystery Ideas page may have their own invitations which you can send to your guests. If you’re choosing a home-made script, you can write your own invitation explaining the role of the person you’re inviting. Try to send the invitations as soon as possible, like a month ago so that the guests can have a thorough idea of their roles.

Tell your guests not to reveal their character and roles to anyone! Not even their own family members! This would create an “environment of mystery” in the party, so that everyone can have fun!

Though mostly would not make any difference in any adult murder mystery party, try to get the right costumes for the party. Some roles might require special dress ups, and it is really fun too!

Allow the guests to talk to each others and know about each other. This would increase the dynamic character of your murder mystery party.

Giving a prize to the sleuth who unmasks the villian would encourage everyone from the beginning.

And, its your responsibility to see if everything is moving on smoothly. Other instructions, specific to the murder mystery script can be found along with the script, so that you can ensure everything moves on smoothly.

Go ahead, have some fun!

Once again, you can choose from various categories of mystery scripts and kits, for all ages and upto 200 guests, from here:Mystery Scripts For Kids, and Mystery Scripts For Adults.

The excavation season will soon be over, as the baking sun makes digging unbearable, but the Oxford University archaeologists lead by Sir William Saville have made a startling discovery. But while the archaeologists make merry, dark clouds gather, internal tensions among the group burst to the surface and one of the local diggers is brutally murdered.

Snow Business: (10 to 12 guests and a host)
Sensitive Information: Includes references to infidelity
Each winter, the Harrisons and the Perrys ski in the French Alps and always rent the Chalet Flaubert. They hire the whole chalet and bring both families and friends. The holidays are usually an opportunity to relax and unwind away from the pressures of normal life, but this year has been different. Jacqui and Mariella have been arguing, Lucy has sprained her wrist, snow has cut the chalet off – and tonight, real tragedy has struck. A few minutes ago, John Morgan was found dead at the foot of the attic steps, his neck broken at an unfortunate angle. Nobody can leave the chalet; and there is no phone or radio in here… Did John fall or was he pushed? Is there a murderer in Chalet Flaubert? Can you achieve your goals, keep your secrets hidden and survive Snow Business? It’s up to you.

In Snow Business you will discover the following:

* What happened to the missing wallet?
* Who still carries a torch for an old flame?
* Is an ungrateful child really sharper than a serpent’s tooth?
* What are the Swiss good at, apart from chocolate and cuckoo clocks?
* … and, of course, who killed John Morgan?

Find out in Snow Business!

Davy Jones’ Locker: (9 to 11 guests and a host)
Sensitive Content: Plot about elopement, reference to voodoo and gypsy magic
It is 1785, and the Caribbean is a hotbed of violence, treachery, the occult and, of course, piracy. Tortuga, an island off the north coast of Haiti, is home not only to peaceful plantations, but also to thieves, gypsies, scavengers, voodoo queens and grave robbers. Tortuga is also a pirate stronghold and a frequent port-of-call for the most feared pirates in the Caribbean.

Abel “Blackheart” Read, the Caribbean’s most nefarious pirate, had wrought havoc for many years throughout the region — but now his reign of terror is over. First, Blackheart and the Pegasus, his ship, was captured a month ago — and then two weeks ago Blackheart’s second-in-command, Calico Jack, ran his ship (the Orion) aground off Tortuga’s rocky north coast. With these two pirates (and their ships) out of business, the waters of the Caribbean are much safer.

They have also created a power vacuum in the pirate world — one that will no doubt be filled before too long.

Tonight, the Libra, a retired warship converted for commercial use, departs from Tortuga on its journey to St. Augustine, Florida. For some of its passengers, this will prove to be a profitable journey. For others, Tortuga may be the last dry land they ever see…

In Davy Jones’ Locker, the course of this fateful journey will be played out over the course of a single evening. There are, among the passengers and crew, an ex-pirate, a gypsy, and a nun. However, not everyone is who, or what, they seem. Some (well, all) of those on board have mysterious secrets and will do anything to prevent them from being revealed.

It is 1939 and across Europe countries are preparing for war. In the distant British colony of Gambia a smaller drama is about to unfold as the tramp riverboat Christabel starts a routine trip along the River Gambia…

Lei’d to Rest: (6 to 12 guests and a host)
Sensitive Content: One character is the mistress of another
It’s the present day on the island of Hawaii. The local culture, exotic and isolated for centuries, is being eroded by the constant stream of tourists flooding through the airports. All sorts of people rub shoulders at the resorts. Most of them are innocent travellers, but some of them have ulterior motives.

Lokuhai Beach is a small, isolated beach in the loneliest part of Harmony Cove. The beach itself is owned by Harmony Cove Resort, about a half-hour drive through rocky, mountainous countryside. Advertised as the “Last Real Hawaiian Beach”, it’s gorgeous. Birds of Paradise call to each other past the vibrant orchids — you could make your own lei in minutes — and jewel-toned lizards beg for table scraps. The music of the forest harmonizes with a nearby waterfall, cascading down the side of a steep hill through pools and sparkling in the sunset as it runs into the cove.

The luau started badly… the bus broke down on the way to the beach, and everyone had to walk the last fifteen minutes. Everyone’s cell phones seem to be unable to reach out of the mountains to the resort (or anywhere else), and the driver has been unable to get the bus running again. One of the guests, Joe Markham, has been trying to help get it started…

It is December 24, 1948. The socialite Evington-Browne family and guests are preparing for the annual Christmas Eve cocktail party, held by tradition at the family’s hunting lodge in the White Mountains north of Boston.
* Who has been wearing a Santa Suit to sneak around?
* Would the infamous cat-burglar ‘the Puma’ dare to strike here?
* Are the Evington-Browne family in danger of losing their money, their reputation in society and their sanity?
* Can anyone keep control of Tracy’s pet monkey?
* … and, of course, who killed the valet?

Under the Big Top: (10 to 15 guests and a host)
Sensitive Content: Two of the characters are rival suitors for the hand of another
It’s 1952 and Bo Bennett’s Big Top Bonanza has reached Sarasota, Florida for their final show. With a successful nine month tour behind them, the performers and staff of the Bonanza are making plans for a restful and rewarding off-season.

As the curtain falls on the final Big Top performance, a select few gather in JoJo Bones’ Exotic Emporium of Enigmatica (part of the Bonanza). To celebrate the successful tour, JoJo will host a night of revelry, food, drink and, this year, what JoJo has promised to be “startling revelations.” Tragically, however, JoJo was killed last night. His body was found early this morning in the lions’ cage, mauled by lions Gladys and Mountjoy. Since JoJo’s body reeked of alcohol, preliminary reports are that he wandered into the cage in a drunken stupor.

But, the show must go on and the post-season party will continue – and so the selected performers and staff of Bo Bennett’s Big Top Bonanza assemble to remember JoJo and celebrate the successful season. This may be their last chance to seal their fates for the future…

It is the spring of 1884. America’s west coast is slowly being populated with small towns full of settlers, coming to prospect for precious metals, set up ranches and run dubious saloons. Now the railway is coming! Cactus Gulch is one such small town. Founded 20 years ago, tonight it has a festive air as the townsfolk get set to start their 20th anniversary celebrations. Plus, the railway is coming! However, all is not running smoothly. Land disputes, disreputable card games, strange folk from out of town and hostile Indians are all adding to a tense atmosphere…

Hosting a mystery party

Its party time!! Not just any old party, you want to throw a party they’ll remember; you want something that is going to be exciting; the usual fare is lots of food and music. Sometimes you may even hire clowns and stand up comedians to come and rock your party, a guitarist or a band, or someone to give you a couple of jaw-dropping hat tricks.

This one is going to be different, because they’re going to come and catch a killer! Your invitees must be people who can do this kind of thing without qualms. Your high-spirited friends who are thrill -bent and would like a good rush and make get their thinking hats on are a great lot to invite. They’ll be trying to solve a murder using the many clues that are left around the house by their host. Ready? Let’s go.

Requirements

Draft a script so that writing out the clues is not such a task. You’ll then need to translate the script into clues that will be all over your party scene.

Have your guest come with costumes and not wear them until the game starts. Of course you should let them know well in advance that they’ll be expected to have costumes. Have a camera to take pictures picture of the people who are going to take part in the game so that the people can use them as the dots which need to be connected. Get flash lights if some rooms are going to be dark. Put clues in balloons so that they can be popped for more clues. Create an outline of a body to be used as the murder exhibit. Let the scene look as authentic as possible with red, blood like color.

Make a script that is both scary and fun and of course be sure to invite friends who are fun, people who love a thrill and who are not easily spooked. This will make or break the kind of party you have.

The party will not be a success if anyone discloses their identities even to their own spouses or partners. Let the invites go out early enough and ensure that all the participants turn up because failure to do so will leave big hole in your script and will have to be filled for the party to be a success; remember to ensure your participants have a vivid description and have histories together and they can only get to know each other’s identities through question asking and sharp investigative skill.

At the party scene, leave clues everywhere. Let there be balloons that are going to lead people to the next clue until they decide who the murderer is. When you want to serve a meal, make sure you do so through a buffet so that you can concentrate on the acting and not serving guests with food and drinks.

The murder script should have loopholes so that the murderer can challenge the allegations and if possible let the murder be almost next to impossible to solve because that is what mystery party is all about – keeping the murder as mysterious as possible. If you can afford hire professionals to come and assist with the script writing this will enable you to come with a murder mystery game that will definitely thrill your guests.

Eventually, someone will unmask the murderer. Give them a prize and make sure they get lots of applause and praise. Of course a round of drinks is a good idea at this point !

Is it a good way to go for a party? Definitely. Many people have not been to a mystery party and this will make it much more interesting – they have no idea what to expect and they have to keep looking and guessing.

All the best and have fun your party!

Mystery parties are growing more and more popular as themes for children’s parties. Everyone wants to be the first to figure out the secret.

Here’s a few tips to guarantee your mystery party is a success.

Make sure you buy or design a party that is age appropriate. Even younger children can enjoy dressing up as detectives and finding missing objects.

Start the fun with the invitations. Along with the regular information: Time, Location, etc., add a special message written backwards or in code. Give a prize to everyone at the party who figured out the message.

Older children will love acting out character biographies. You might want to send their information in advance so they can memorize a few things about their character and dress in costume.

The settings for these parties are limited only to your imagination. A few options are:

Medieval days with knights and ladies roaming through castle halls. A wizard or two fits in well with this theme.

Sherlock Holmes parties will send everyone into their best “Elementary, my dear Watson” imitations. It’s always fun to pretend you’re in foggy, mysterious London searching for evil villains.

Spies are always popular with children. This party should be filled with secret codes and high level security clearances. Can they save the world before Chaos take over?

Never forget the hard-boiled P.I. with trench coat and hat. You can’t find a more classic private eye theme than Sam Spade wannabe’s wandering the streets of San Francisco looking for the Maltese Falcon.

Space ships are a way to mix the best of sci-fi and mystery. Whether it’s Capt. Kirk or Jimmy Neutron, a space age mystery can be “out of this world”.

Tropical islands, carnivals, cruise ships, old haunted mansions, the circus, abandoned theaters, and wild west ghost towns are a few other examples of possible settings.

A quick search online can give you many ideas and sources for any type of mystery party your child wants. You can find everything from a few helpful ideas to a complete mystery party package with plot and accessories included. Make sure a few red herrings are involved so the mystery isn’t figured out too quickly.

A well planned mystery party will have your child’s friends talking for ages about the cool party you hosted and how much fun they had figuring out “who done it”.

Planning your child’s birthday party in advance is the best way to stay within a set budget. Every last minute trip you make to the party store can throw your budget into overdrive. If you haven’t planned ahead and are forced to take everyone to the local pizza place or bowling alley you might need to apply for a small loan.

Here are the things you need to think about when planning your child’s party:

Guest list – If your child is flexible about how many children are attending they might be willing to invite fewer friends so they can go somewhere more expensive. But if you already know that you must invite your child’s entire classroom, plus their Sunday school class, as well as a few cousins – then the guest list is the first place to start.

Location, Location, Location – One of the best ways to cut expenses is to host the party at your home. Needless to say, there are pro’s and con’s to this idea. Make sure your house or yard is big enough for the amount of guests you’re having. Some of the parents will hang around during the party so you need to have room for them, too. Grandparents will also want to be there. Lock the family pet in a back bedroom for their own safety! If you want to have the party in your backyard you need to be aware of the weather. Is it the middle of summer in Texas? Is it the dead of winter in Wisconsin? The good news is you know those weather patterns in advance and can plan accordingly.

Rain is the tricky factor. If you plan an outside party you need to have some sort of back-up plan in case a monsoon blows in that the weatherman didn’t anticipate.

Parks are a low cost location for a party. You might be able to rent a pavilion or gazebo at a reasonable cost. There are picnic tables and sometimes grills available. Plus, playground equipment is built in entertainment for the kids.

If you attend a church regularly they sometimes have rooms they’ll rent for parties.

Additional options are:

Children’s museums

Bowling alleys

Miniature golf courses

Craft places

Gymnastic centers

There are many other places to host your child’s party and most of them are expensive. The best way to find out the costs of each place is to spend some time on the phone.

Remember to ask:

How many children you’re allowed to bring.

What is the cost per child?

Are drinks and snacks included?

How about cake?

What kind of entertainment is provided?

How long does the party last?

A big advantage of going somewhere else for your party is they’re in charge of clean up! Sometimes decisions need to be based on what you currently have more of, time or money.

Theme – Your child’s age and interests will help decide the theme of their party. And the older they get, the more they’ll have specific ideas about what they want. Though sometimes a three-year-old can be extremely emphatic about their requests, also.

Decorations – These will be determined by the theme. A generic theme such as pirates, cowboys, princesses, or a luau will usually be cheaper than a cartoon theme. However, you can offset this partly by combining general and specific. In other words, even if your child insists on a “Pirates of the Caribbean” party you can have a few decorations that are official and then finish off with regular pirate decorations. Not every single decoration needs to be a Disney product. You might want to check packages since sometimes buying a complete set of plates, cups, decorations, etc. is cheaper than buying things piece by piece.

Ordering your decorations online is a lot cheaper than your local party store. Be sure and check several websites and compare prices.

Snacks – The type of snacks you provide will depend partly on what time of day the party is and the length of time the kids are there. If you have a 2:00 party you’ll know the kids have already had lunch. You can provide an hour’s worth of entertainment, open presents, and then have cake, drinks and a few chips. If you plan a party at 12:00 or 5:00 you’d better be prepared to provide something more substantial than cake. The good news is that kids love hot dogs and pizza and you don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy appetizers. The bad news is the parents who stay for the whole party will want to eat, too, so order some extra for them.

Entertainment – If you’re having a party at another location the entertainment is often included. But if you’re hosting the party at your home then this is all on you. If you’re outside then water balloons and lawn games can pass a lot of time. Make sure you plan games that are age appropriate and have someone helping you.Hiring entertainment is also an option. There are clowns, magicians, balloon twisters, face painters, and costumed characters available for parties. Depending on the size of your town you may have many options. Ask other parents for recommendations.

If you can find a high school or college student who twists balloons or does magic you may be able to find a real bargain. But you must make sure they understand the age of the children who’ll be attending. A magic show that is great for seven- year-olds will be a disaster for three-year-olds. The clown that the four-year- olds love will be “totally lame” for eight-year-olds.

Gift Bags – Once again, buying online can help with the cost of gift bags. They don’t have to elaborate. A few toys and some candy are always a hit.Remember, the purpose of your child’s birthday party is making him or her feel special. They need to know that it’s THEIR day. They’ll enjoy being in on the planning and knowing that their wants and suggestions were considered.

They’ll remember the fun they had not the money you spent. The fact that your expenses were $75 and not $300 will never enter their minds. Don’t focus on what the neighbors did or what’s expected. Planning a budget party doesn’t have to detract from making a day of awesome memories for you and your child.

Happy partying and take lots of pictures!

Having a themed party is a great way to make entertaining more fun and exciting, both as a host or as a guest. Party themes also make it easy to coordinate every aspect of the occasion, from the decorations to the food. When you find just the right theme, you can take an ordinary party to extraordinary – dazzling your guests with a memorable event.

The key to successful party themes is to make them meaningful, either to yourself or the person the party is for. When you choose a theme that has meaning to you, you will put more effort into getting creative with it. Naturally, your own personal style and tastes will add a unique touch to whatever theme you decide to use.

Some think of party themes as only for children’s parties but that is not the case. Themed parties for adults can be a spectacular way to celebrate any occasion or even just to have fun entertaining friends for no apparent reason at all. The theme doesn’t even have to be something incredibly elaborate to be effective. The main thing is to carry the chosen theme throughout everything including the invitations, the music you play, activities, decorations and the menu.

To decide on a party theme, think about different things that you could focus on and what the occasion is. If it’s a birthday or anniversary party, think about what that person enjoys most. A birthday party theme for an adult who enjoys reading mysteries could be a murder mystery party. That’s where the entire party is planned around clues to solving the mystery you’ve staged. Perhaps the birthday person collects a certain item – could you plan a party around that collectible?

You can easily come up with party themes that can go with any occasion, all through life. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular occasions where a theme could take your party from ho-hum to spectacular.

Baby Shower Party

Most people only get a baby shower with their first child so this should be a very memorable occasion for the mother-to-be and the rest of the family. One of the best ways to ensure that happens is to have a themed party. There are several ways to choose a theme for a baby shower party.

One thing that can not only make the party wonderful but help decorate the nursery after is to have party themes related to what the parents want for nursery décor. With this type of theme, you can decorate accordingly but also tell party goers to base their gift selections on that theme. Winnie the Pooh has been a perennial favorite baby shower theme because it works for either boys or girls.

1st Birthday Party

The 1st birthday party is one of the important occasions in your child’s and your life. The only thing that is a given is the chocolate cake. You know you have to let them have chocolate so they can make a humongous mess and everyone can laugh and take great pictures, right? It’s pretty much a tradition.

The rest of the party doesn’t have to follow any set tradition, however, but party themes are something to consider to make the occasion truly stand out. The child is a little young to have a favorite character yet but parents enjoy making the party a special one.

Sweet 16 Birthday Party

Ah, the sweet 16 party…the highlight of many a young girl’s life. For some reason, the 16th birthday doesn’t seem to mean as much to boys but for girls this is a magic age. On the very cusp of adulthood, yet still young enough to dream of princesses and knights in shining armor. For this very special birthday, there are many party themes to choose from.

Much of the choice should rely on what your sweet 16 year old would enjoy the most. While many at that age are very romantic and dreamy, others are very sporty or adventurous. Your choice of theme should go with their personality for it to be the hit you want it to be.

Mystery Party

The mystery party is what we alluded to above with the most common form being the Murder Mystery party themes. There are a number of companies who can help provide the actors for such a party but you could also do it yourself with a few friends. It just takes more creativity that way.

The problem with creating the entire scenario and background yourself is that you can’t enjoy the process of discovering the clues and possibly catching the murderer. That’s why the companies that specialize in this are so popular because then you can enjoy the party as much as your guests.

Christmas Party

Christmas party themes can be completely traditional, full of poinsettias and throwing on a Yule log but they don’t have to be traditional if you don’t want them to be. That’s the beauty of being creative with party themes – you can truly do anything you want to.

One way to come up with a new theme is to carry through a color scheme throughout the entire party. Perhaps you want a pink Christmas tree? You can also decorate the table with pink candles, pink poinsettias and pink Christmas balls.

Take a look around and you’ll find more details on these party themes and many more ideas for your next gathering. Make your party something that will be talked about for years to come by choosing memorable party themes.
